John McCain has just shown how cunning he truly is. He has appointed Sarah Palin, the relatively young Governor of Alaska.
Palin, a political unknown, is immune to attacks on her record, as she has a very short record. Similar to how Obama, with his short history is nearly beyond professional suspicion, so his enemies attacked him personally instead.
Palin, who is being called a hockey mom as opposed to a “Secret Muslim,” was not selected solely on her immunity to suspicion. She was selected because she is the perfect way to steal the votes of bitter women that supported Hilary Clinton’s bid for the Democratic nomination.
Clinton’s campaign presented America with a chance to finally elect a female president. I’d venture a guess that most of Clinton’s supporters were not simply casting their votes based on sex, but it is undeniable that there were many who did. With the defeat of Clinton, the American airwaves were full of former Clinton supporters who were declaring their support, in the form of protest votes, for John McCain. Men and women, but primarily women, who had formerly supported Hilary Clinton were betraying her in a misguided attempt to spite the Democrats who voted for Obama.
Imagine then, what the Republican election-machine must have thought of this. Nearly half the Democratic-supporting Americans were pissed off and looking for a way to see their dreams come true. For most of those people, their dreams were of a strong leader. But for a significant minority, their dreams were simply to see a woman in the white house in a role other than first lady.
Now these people have Palin. A fiscal and social conservative who is a pro-lifer, who wants creationism taught in public schools, and who opposes both gay marriage and legal benefits for same sex couples.
What a champion of the people.
She is the anti-Clinton. The two politicians are such polar opposites that if they ever came into contact with one another they would annihilate, forming two gamma ray photons travelling in opposite directions.
Yet, there are still those who will vote for McCain because of her, because to some people policy doesn’t matter, position doesn’t matter, issues don’t matter, it is only sex that matters. These people of course are sexists.
I’ve yet to see them being called that in the mainstream media.
Why?
Because you aren’t allowed to be called a sexist if you are either a woman or misandrist.
I hope, for America’s sake, that the sexists see past the smoke and mirrors, and realise what Palin is in this race: a lure into four more years of hell.
